I started my journey into birth work years before fulfilling formal training. I grew up taking care of children in my neighbourhood and those of family friends. I believe this fascinated with the world of pregnancy, birth, and newborns, led me to this work. All of the grandchildren on my mom's side were born at home with midwives so I grew up in the environment that pregnancy and childbirth were something to be celebrated. This was a time when you are fully informed, never alone, and unconditionally supported in your care. So as you could imagine, I was surprised and upset with the stories I heard in my early adulthood about parents feeling like they were blindsided during their pregnancy and birth, coerced and pressured into things because "their doctor knew what to do". This wasn't the way it was supposed to be! At this point in my life I had a degree that revolved around the relationships we develop on individual, community, and societal levels, and the lasting impacts they have on one another's lives. I knew I loved working with families and children, was focused on relationship and community building, and recognized that connecting one on one makes a huge difference in someone's day. Being a doula brings all my strengths together. Loving on and uplifting my community, connecting face to face, encouraging patience, acceptance, and listening to ones intuition. I also focus on genuinely having fun with those I spend my time with. I do focus a great deal of time and energy into my relationship with clients throughout their journey and I can confidently say being a doula rarely feels like work! Apart from birth work, I enjoy being outdoors with my husband, 2 young sons, and dog. Some of our favorite things to do together are camping, fishing, hiking, biking, snowshoeing, and we recently added cross country skiing to the mix. As an introvert, I find I need to designated time alone to recharge. Taking my chocolate lab for a walk, strength training, and reading a good book top my list of self care! |
