At a young age I became fascinated by pregnancy, birth and babies. I remember being present at family members' births and feeling like it was the most wonderful thing in the world to be part of. The energy, excitement, and joy with the birth of a new life cannot be described, a family is forever transformed. I knew this was what I wanted to surround myself with. I am blessed to be the mom of 2 little boys, and their birth stories could not have been more different. Having such polar opposite experiences has inspired and driven my continual search for more information, options, and resources to support moms, partners and families transition and grow together.
I have an undergraduate degree in Human Ecology, with a focus in family studies and child and youth development. I later worked with an early education program, responsible for planning, developing, and implementing the nutrition program. I didn't realise just how influential preschoolers were on their family's eating habits. I completed further education to become a Holistic Nutritional Consultant in 2014. Being "healthy" is so much more than eating your vegetables! Stress, lifestyle, personal goals and individual preferences contribute immensely to our overall wellbeing. I came into this field to support women in creating an individualized birth experience that is right for each mother, and family. To me, being a doula is an amazing calling, shared experiences bring people together and what could bring anyone together more than the birth of a child. Doulas develop a special intimate bond with each family as we are invited to witness the beginning of new life while encouraging and empowering birthing mothers to have the confidence in themselves, their bodies and their birth wishes. Regardless of surprises along the way, and there usually are, I want expecting mothers to be able to reflect back on their birth story and feel it was a positive experience. |
